Deuk-Am Choi Yong-sul
Deuk-Am Choi Yong-sul was born on July 20, 1899, in Yeongdong, Chungbuk, the second son of Choi Sa-yeon and Moi Jeong Hak, and later moved to Gimcheon, Gyeongbuk. At the age of nine, he crossed over to Kyuju, Japan as an adopted son of Daigichi Yamada (Sanjeon Daegil), was entrusted to a temple, and then he wandered around the streets and was taken to Isu-nim, Hideo Yamamoto ( a Buddhist Monk) (Sanbonsuong), and at the age of 13, he introduced Deuk-Am Choi to Sogaku Takeda (Masayoshi Minamoto) (invincible),
the successor of the visionary duties of the Chung Wha Won (Takeda in Japan) family of Korea. Was initiated.
The inspiration of the expedition was to take Asao Yoshida (Deuk-Am Choi) to Otsu, go to the temple where the Shillaguk deity is enshrined, go to Kyoto, and take the train to the house of Aizu Bun, Fukushima Prefecture. The next day, after spending time again in Fukaido, he was able to see the martial arts inspired by the expedition for the first time at a place where Daedongryu was taught at the Maengjeon Village in North Gyeontaek, Fukaido. (Before Deuk-Am Choi was taken as a student by Takeda Sokaku he was made to watch for a long time.)
In the neighboring area, the descendants of the inspired martial arts still live. Only when he went to Asahikawa he was taught by the inspiration (Takeda Sokaku) of the expedition. Around 1914, in Asahikawa, there was a great fight with Takeda Sokaku and laborers, Morihei Ueshiba, who was watching the scene, made a request (Who later founded AIKIDO) to be initiated. When Deuk-Am was 16 years old, Takeda Sokaku was to select 5 more people to enter the Yamanashi-Shinjusan Punghyeol, where they trained for 7 years. Later, the inspiration of the expedition (Takeda Sokaku) guided the gods, including Emperor Sohwa at the Imperial Palace, and Takeda Sokaku guided Emperor Sohwa, and the ministers were said to be guided by his disciples.
At the end of his imperial training, he was said to have won the title of “Ichibon Ichi,” given by Emperor Sohwa, as he won the highest championship in the imperial family’s selection of the best in Japan. He decided to live in Otaru and was said to have helped the mining industry of the area.
After hearing the news of Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbor, Deuk-Am was forcibly admitted to the hospital by Takeda Sokaku for minor surgery and was able to avoid the recruitment of commandos. Japan loses the war. Takeda commanded Deuk-Am Choi on his death bed to go back to his homeland, Deuk-Am Choi did not look back and returned to Korea, where Daitoryu originally came from. I left Otaru on January 5, 1946 and arrived in Busan for only three days, and when I passed the Cheongdo Cave on the train going to Hwanggan, my hometown, I lost all, the long sword, the certificate from Takeda Sokaku, and the money received from the most important emperor Sohwa. . After staying with my pregnant wife and two young daughters at an inn in front of Cheongdo Station for a week, I came down to Daegu to settle.
The Korean War broke out in 1950, and society was in further chaos and difficulties. The private tutoring was started on February 12, 1951, under the name of “Hapki Yukwonsul” at the request of people who wanted to teach and learn martial arts in earnest from Deuk-Am, who had a difficult life at the time due to economically difficult times. After that, in 1952, the people who came to Ambassador Deuk-Am to learn martial arts were Seo Byung-don and Jang Seung-ho. Then, in 1953, Han Jae Ji, Mu hong Kim, and Jong Won Moon followed. After that, in 1954, he obtained a barn from a grandmother’s house in a residential area next to Yeommae Market in Daegu city, and made a space to teach martial arts.
In the spring of 1956, Choi Yong-sul settled in Daegu, and for the first time built his own house in Bongsan-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu-si, and made a dojo in his house and taught there.
In 1958, Seung-Gil Hong and Jeong-yoon Kim were initiated under Mr. Yong-Sul Choi. These are the disciples who formally taught at Choi Yong-sul’s own home.
In March 1960, the “Korea Convergence Technical (Association)” was officially established, and the first Hapki martial arts Association, Mr. Choi Yong-Sul as President, was established. In September 1963, “The Korean Kido Association” was founded, and Mr. Yong-Sul Choi was inaugurated as the 1st president.
In May 1964, Master Jong-bae Lim was initiated. After the two-year term expired, in October 1965, Ambassador Deuk-Am was inaugurated as the second President. Over the next 10 years, he continued to operate Sudeok-gwan dojang in Bongsan-dong, Daegu, teaching his disciples.
In 1968, Deuk-Am was named “The 1st National Demonstration Competition of the National Hapkido Integration” at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul on May 27, 1968, in order to correct the great integration of martial arts and transfer them to the correct technique In the meantime, he went out to the demonstration contest and showed the demonstration, and the martial artists of the time were elected, and he took office as a runaway named “Daehan Hapkido”. In addition, a signboard was placed on the dojo of Deuk-Am in Daegu City, saying [“Daehan Hapkido Headquarters Hapkido Doju Choi Yongsul”]. From that time on, the name [Hapkido] was officially used in Korea.
Kim Jong-pil was the honorary president of this integrated conference. Also, the leaders of the politics, relations, and economic circles of the time were big figures of the time.
“The unified declaration at this time was [We have cleared out the factions and prejudices so far for the better development of Hapkido in Korea, and united in unity with all of them to train the mind and body only through arts and martial arts classes, torch character, and strong definition of the outside world. As an apostle of the Founding Islands, Hapkido will lead the ranks of national defense on the founding island. With the belief that Hapkido is a wise self-defense art unique to the nation, and with the conviction that he will exercise his skills and spirit not only domestically, but also all over the world, our members of Hapkido raised the banner of Hapkido revival and Daehan Hapkido. In the name of 300,000 members, it is sworn in front of all the people to unite under the flag of the association and proclaimed it under all circumstances. May 27, 1968 at Jangchung Gymnasium” ].
In order to integrate this under the name of Hapkido, after holding a contest that revealed such grand aspirations, first of all, it was necessary to integrate techniques under the name of Hapkido, and establish the correct technique for numerous directors and instructors across the country. I had to do it.
Thus, on October 31, 1970, the 1st Hapkido State Certification “Hapkido Industrial Corps Examination” was conducted. This 1st official examination was conducted by Ambassador Deuk-Am, a fleeing leader of Hapkido to Korea, and Master Hong Seung-Gil, Director of Hapkido Headquarters (Sudokgwan), Korea. At this time, those with less than 3 steps were conducted at the Judo Hall of the Shinil Gymnasium, Seoul, and more than 4 steps were conducted at the main building of the Shinmugwan (Kwan Kim Moo-hong) in Jongmyo, Seoul.
At this time, in the Hapkido protagonist’s certification examination, the skill level of the Dan certificate awarded by each dojo was insufficient, and the degree of skill acquisition was insufficient. If the martial arts skills were judged by the official Dan certificate, and the result was that they were not able to certify their own Dan certificates as an official Dan certificate, the number of Dan certificates awarded by each dojo was lowered and recognized.
Let’s admit that the official recognition team is lower than the Dan certificate awarded by their own dojo. For the purpose of consolidation and unification of skills, despite the fact that these measures were inevitable, they did not agree, and because each dojang did not cooperate, it was no longer possible to improve the level of skills and pass on more skills to each dojang. There was no further progress.
Therefore, with the exception of the Headquarters of Doju Choi Yong-sul, in Daegu, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and some of his disciples who received many skills from Deuk-Am before that, he possessed a lot of skills and high technical level. Advanced skills could no longer be passed on.
Of course, he also gave discriminatory skills to some of the disciples who had been studying for a long time from Ambassador Deuk-Am. As a result, the types and numbers of the skills of each dojang vary widely, and some dojangs with insufficient skills are taught by mixing different martial arts, becoming the same form as they are today, and it is becoming more and more intensified as the generations are growing farther away from the source (Deuk-Am Choi). Everyone who learned martial arts from him knows that it is the hometown of Hapkido in Korea and its origin is Ambassador Choi Yong-sul, Deuk-Am. However, in some cases, it is investigated that some people pretend to be the founders of Korean Hapkido. It is not a proper treatment for martial arts people who should value fidelity and loyalty more than their lives.
